STATE IN SOCIETY

ABSTRACT: How do particular societies and states end up with their distinctive character? How are the rules that shape everyday behavior determined?  Who gains from these rules and who loses? And how and when do these rules and patterns of privilege change? I have explored these questions through an approach I have labeled “state in society.” In this lecture, I elaborate the approach, arguing how it gives insight into the central questions that social science has asked over the last two centuries.

摘要:为何不同的国家或社会都有其独特的特征?那些影响日常行为的规则是如何制定的?谁从规则中受益,谁又从中受损?这些规则及其相关的特权模式何时、如何发生变迁?作者通过他称之为“社会中的国家”这一研究路径探讨这些问题。作者在此次演讲中将阐释这一研究路径,并讨论这一路径对过去两个世纪中社会科学的核心问题带来的洞察力。

THE PUBLIC: INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION

The word “public” is a very common term in the social sciences—as in public opinion, public space, public sphere, and public behavior. The word is used in all these cases as an adjective. But what does this adjective rest on—what is the noun? What is the public? In this lecture, Migdal explores the deeper meaning of “public” and argues that it is an important element in understanding the relations among different segments of society and between society and the state. In his argument, the public indicates with whom people engage, what rules they use for that engagement, how they express conflicting interests, and how they resolve their differences. In an urban society, rules for everyday relations and discourse develop. The lecture asks who makes these rules—whom do they favor? Who is disadvantaged by the rules—who is excluded? And how do these rules change over time?

BOUNDARIES AND BELONGING

ABSTRACT: Since the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, territorial boundaries have become a central part of the international system. They define the spatial limits of sovereignty. Contested boundaries between states have often been the cause of wars. But boundaries are more than lines that separate states from one another. In this lecture, I will explore two other sorts of boundaries that are deeply intertwined with territorial boundaries. One is the boundary between state and society, and the other is the boundary that separates groups whose members think of themselves as “us” and those outside the group as “others.” The lecture argues that much of the dynamics of conflict and social change we see in the world around us today are the clash of these varying sorts of boundaries.
